Our Chief Economist Torsten Slok recently joined Barron's Roundtable on Fox Business to discuss his views on rising inflation concerns.
He explained that while many experts consider inflation fears to be temporary—driven by impacts from COVID—there are three different driving factors which may cause inflation worries to be more permanent: labor shortages and rising wages, rising housing prices, and lingering supply chain problems.
“We could have an inflation problem that’s going to last least until the end of this year, and potentially well into next year,” he said.
Additional discussion topics included: the Delta variant’s ongoing market impacts and the potential market implications if there’s an impasse over the upcoming U.S. debt ceiling deadline in October.

While the Fed’s rate hikes have reigned in growth, especially among over-levered consumers, corporates, and banks, the easing of financial conditions since the “Fed pivot” in December continues to offset the effect of higher rates. For the rest of 2024, we expect economic growth to be higher than consensus and inflation to stay above the Fed’s target. We see no Fed cuts in 2024.
