Helping to Shape the Future of DC Plans

Designed to drive better outcomes for DC plan participants through private market investments and lifetime income solutions.

DC plan participants deserve access to the same caliber of investment capabilities as defined benefit (DB) plan participants.

We're bringing Apollo's scale, deep history in private markets and Athene's leadership in guaranteed income to retirement fiduciaries to help participants retire with confidence.

Retirement Income

Lifetime income solutions can help participants turn their savings into durable, predictable income streams through retirement.

Improved Structure

Incorporating perpetual semi-liquid investment vehicles within collective investment trusts and separate accounts has made it easier for fiduciaries to include private market investments in their professionally managed portfolios.

Return Potential

An allocation to diversified private markets offers potential for risk-adjusted returns, net of fees.

Fiduciary Oversight

Private assets and lifetime income solutions can be included in professionally managed solutions with fiduciary oversight that works within existing DC plan architecture and governance frameworks.

Portfolio Resilience

Private assets have historically helped improve portfolio resilience, lower volatility and exhibit a lower correlation to public markets. Lifetime income solutions can help insulate retirement income from market volatility.

“Our goal is to support better retirement outcomes: expanding the toolkit and integrating private markets and retirement income solutions we believe can help enhance risk-adjusted returns, diversification and retirement security.”

What New Defined Contribution Guidance Could Mean for the Future of Retirement
The Defined Contribution (DC) space is at an inflection point, as evolving policy guidance has the potential to support new pathways for innovation in retirement plan design. That was a key takeaway from a recent discussion with Apollo’s Ashwini Apte (Managing Director, Head of Institutional DC Consultant & OCIO Client Relations), Rebecca Tadikonda (Partner and CEO of Vitera) and James Hannigan (Partner and Head of Enterprise Product Structuring).

Debunking the Liquidity Myth to Unlock Private Markets for DC Plans
For decades, conventional wisdom has held that private markets are too illiquid, risky and inflexible for defined contribution (DC) retirement plans. But many of these objections no longer hold water especially those focused on liquidity. Thanks to recent innovations in structure, strategy and oversight, the tools to manage liquidity within DC plans have evolved dramatically.

Private Markets: A New Frontier for Superior Retirement Outcomes
As the US retirement landscape continues to evolve, the ongoing shift from defined benefit (DB) pensions to defined contribution (DC) plans continues to expose the critical gap in both retirement savings and strategy. The traditional portfolios powering today’s DC plans—typically centered around publicly traded equities and bonds—are showing signs of strain, especially in a world defined by heightened market volatility, concentration, compressed returns and growing longevity risk.

As retirement systems shift from Defined Benefit (DB) to Defined Contribution (DC), the responsibility for generating sustainable retirement income has increasingly moved from employers to individuals.

While not immune to the shifts in policy and the macroeconomic outlook, we expect to see resilient demand for private credit as the need for direct, larger, and more flexible financing remains and is likely reinforced by economic uncertainty.

A combination of elevated public stock and bond valuations, recalcitrant inflation, and higher-for-longer interest rates could be creating new challenges for 60/40 portfolios and an attractive entry point to private markets.

Akila Grewal, Partner, Global Head of Credit Product, takes a deep dive into a fast-growing segment of the credit market—Investment Grade Private Credit (Private IG)—and discusses how it can be deployed alongside public bonds to potentially enhance outcomes.
